The Western Cape Government has officially opened applications for the Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme for the 2026 academic year. This life-changing opportunity is designed for South African students who are passionate about careers in the Transport, Engineering, and Built Environment sectors.

Fields of Study Covered

Students pursuing degrees or diplomas in the following fields may apply:

  • Architecture
  • Construction Management
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
  • Geomatics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Property Studies
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Town/City and Regional Planning
  • Transport Economics/Studies

Eligible Institutions

Applicants must plan to study at one of the following Western Cape universities:

  • University of Cape Town (UCT)
  • Stellenbosch University (SU)
  • Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)

What the Bursary Covers

The bursary includes comprehensive support for students, such as:

  • Tuition fees
  • Prescribed textbooks and study materials
  • Accommodation and meals (or transport costs)
  • Support services and training programmes
  • Internship and job placement opportunities after graduation

Post-Graduation Obligations

Recipients of the bursary are required to:

  • Attend workshops, outreach programmes, and training during weekends
  • Work in public service or a partner company for the same number of years as they received bursary funding

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be in Grade 12 or have already completed Matric
  • Be planning to study full-time towards a relevant degree or diploma in 2026
  • Be accepted or registered at UCT, SU, or CPUT
  • Preference will be given to:
    • Financially disadvantaged students
    • Female students
    • Students with disabilities
    • Residents of the Western Cape

Required Supporting Documents

Applicants must submit certified copies of the following:

  • ID document
  • Latest or final Matric results
  • Full academic record (if at tertiary level)
  • Proof of registration or application at UCT, SU, or CPUT
  • Full 2026 course outline
  • Study cost estimate
  • Proof of residential address
  • Parents’/Guardians’ ID and proof of income
  • Motivational letter
  • Medical proof of disability (if applicable)
  • Police clearance (if applicable)
  • Proof of other financial aid or debts (if applicable)
